Ranch floor plans make up the majority of the most popular floor plans across the country. The ranch style home, or rambler, is a classic style that is almost synonymous with one story living. There are just so many options available that offer space for entertainment and living. Designers and architects have created so many plans and styles that choosing the right home plan can almost seem overwhelming.

Ranch floor plans are just practical. With all of the living space on one floor there are no steps to navigate or stairways to take up floor space. However, architectural drama can still be created by adding vaulted ceilings, cathedral ceilings, trapezoid windows, and decorative ceiling treatments (i.e. trey ceilings, coffered ceilings, etc.). Exterior curb appear can be enhanced with decorative dormers, dramatic recesses, and a large number of porch options. Many single floor plans also offer opportunities for bonus space in the attic or over the garage which can be finished in the future.

There are so many styles that take advantage of the one story home plan configuration. In the northern areas these include cottages, bungalow, and ranch plans. In the south these can include colonial and contemporary designs. With large coastal areas many beach homes also utilize single floor designs such as the Mediterranean Style. With space to spare, Texas is famous for large Texas Ranch Homes. Southwestern ranch floor plans include Spanish Colonial, Mission, and Pueblo styles.

Because one story homes offer all of the space on a single floor, they typically require larger building lots. It just takes more land to build out instead of up. In addition, ranch floor plans require more roof and foundation making their convenience slightly more expensive than other home plan options. Many outdoor options for decks, patios, and porches enhance the character of single story homes that can make them great options for everyone.
